GLADYS PUGH

CHIEF YELLOWCOAT/SPORTS ORGANISER

WELSH

HAIR:     BLACK

FEMALE

Gladys was born in 1933 and she joined Maplins Holiday Camp in 1955 and rose through the ranks to become Sports Organiser and later Chief Yellow-coat. Upon Jeffrey Fairbrother's arrival at the camp, she fell passionately in love with him.

Her sharp tongue is always ready to chastise the pretty, younger girl Yellow-coats, especially when she is promoted to Chief Yellow-coat

BETTY WHISTLER

YELLOWCOAT

ENGLISH

HAIR:     BLONDE

FEMALE

Betty was born in 1938 and worked at Maplins as a Yellow-coat during the 1958 and 1959 seasons. She also had a dislike for Gladys, whom she saw as bossy and overbearing.

GARY BOLTON

YELLOWCOAT

ENGLISH

HAIR:     BLONDE

MALE

Gary is the third male Yellow-coat. He is often portrayed as a very vain man, obsessed with women and his appearance. He had a personal crisis during the 1960 season when he couldn't take part in the assault course race against the Marines because he was receiving treatment for hair loss.

DAWN

ENGLISH

FEMALE

Dawn was born in Watford. She often clashed with Gladys over her habit of pouting rather than smiling. She grew close to Clive Dempster during the 1960 season, albeit without Gladys' knowledge. Late on in the season she was admitted to hospital with Appendicitis, allowing Peggy to replace her as a Yellow coat.

TRACEY BENTWOOD

YELLOWCOAT

HAIR: BROWN

An attractive brunette. She clashed with Gladys several times, most notably when she was temporarily made Chief Yellow coat and Sports Organiser by Joan Wainwright.

PEGGY OLLERENSHAW

CHALET MAID

HAIR:     BLONDE

FEMALE

A humble chalet maid with a big personality, Peggy's one dream is to become a Yellow coat. She is constantly trying to have her talent recognised and suffers her fair share of knocks. However, her reliability and kindly nature endear her to the entertainment staff, and she is often called upon to help out.

JEFFREY FAIRBROTHER

ENTERTAINMENT MANAGER

ENGLISH

POSH ACCENT

MALE

Jeffrey is a professor of archaeology at Cambridge University when he decides he is going nowhere and wants to enter a proper working environment and meet real people.

Jeffrey is totally out of his depth, he is uncomfortable around people, uptight and awkward. He has to be played posh and strait-laced and is completely oblivious to Gladys’s charms.

FRED QUILLY

RIDING INSTRUCTOR

ENGLISH ACCENT

MALE

Fred is a former jockey who lives in hope of getting back his licence, which was taken from him following accusations of fixing races.

He is now the Riding Instructor and is in charge of the camp horses, which are far from the racing standard he was once used to.

MR PARTRIDGE

CHILDREN’S ENTERTAINER

MALE

As children's entertainer Uncle Willie, Partridge's chief responsibility is to perform the regular Punch and Judy shows.

However, his profession belies his true self, as he has a passionate dislike of children of all ages. This - plus his own fall from wartime stardom - causes him great unhappiness and he is forever moaning about the state of the world, invariably turning to drink to drown his sorrows.

________________________________________________________________

YVONNE STUART-HARGREAVES

POSH ACCENT

FEMALE

Supercilious ex-ballroom dancing champion, Yvonne is horrified at having been reduced to working in such a squalid place as Maplin's. She considers herself a cut above everyone else on the staff, not to mention the frightfully common campers, and is often reluctant to participate in staff duties. Moody, ungrateful and not nice at all

Her relationship with husband and dance partner Barry is tempestuous and the two often engage in vitriolic exchanges.

BARRY STUART-HARGREAVES

POSH ACCENT

MALE

Yvonne's husband and dancing partner is clearly regarded by his wife as being beneath her. His original name was Bert Pratt, until Yvonne took him on and taught him grace and manners.

The pair bicker constantly, with Barry always ready to bring his wife down a peg or two with a pithy put-down. Eventually though, he has enough and deserts the partnership, leaving Yvonne devastated.

TED BOVIS

Ted was the camp host and was very popular with the campers. He ran every event which were often scams to cheat the campers out of money, which included fake birthdays, raffles, fund-raisers and rigged bingo. One of his most memorable schemes was selling tickets for male campers to view a pornographic film in the middle of the night.

Although highly regarded for his work, he is inclined to be greedy

SPIKE DIXON

COMIC

MALE

Spike is the new Camp Comic, who Ted has taken under his wing in order to teach him everything he knows about comedy.

Spike is eager to learn and is always willing to put on the most ridiculous costumes to get a laugh from the campers. However, his intrinsic honesty is at odds with Ted's dodgy dealings, and the two are often at loggerheads.
